Bear Street Outfitters - Education and Buy Night

9/15/2025

Picture

Where: Bear Street Outfitters, 203a Bear Street, Banff
When: Thursday, October 2, 5:00PM - close

Join us for our Annual Buy Night & Equipment Education Session at Bear Street Outfitters.  In addition Bear Street staff, our Grizzly and Freeride Head Coaches Emily and Thibault will be onsite to chat and answer any questions about your athletes' equipment needs for the season.

The primary goal of this event is to create conversation around finding the right equipment for your athlete. A properly fitted boot, or choosing the right type of ski for the right environment can make a big difference in skill development on snow.

You can take home new equipment that evening, or simply gain knowledge to make confident decisions around the gear you already have. Either way, you'll leave better prepared for the season ahead.

We are grateful to offer this event at Bear Street Outfitters and grateful we have the support of a local Banff business for our Bow Valley population.

Hope to see you all there.

When: Monday, September 22, 5:30 pm till close
(there is no scheduled Calgary dryland on the 22nd)
Join use for our 3rd Buy Night & Information Session at Ski West.  In addition to store staff and ski reps, our Head Coaches will be onsite to answer any questions you may have about your athletes' ski equipment needs for the season or general club questions.

As in past years, Ski West is offering, for September 22 only:
  • 10% off all regular priced soft goods for both athletes and their families
  • 10% off all regular priced hard goods (skis, boots, poles, bindings, goggles, helmets) for athletes

How to Meet your Volunteer Commitment for the 2025-2026 Season & Ski Sale Sign-Up

9/3/2025

Picture
The 25/26 season is just getting started with Freeride athletes just having completed a very successful water ramp camp, our FIS team arriving home for Europe today, and we just finished up first volunteer opportunity of the year with a casino this past weekend. If your weren't able to volunteer at the casino, don't worry our next volunteer opportunity is just around the corner!

For those of you new to the club, in order to fully meet your volunteer commitment you must check off 3 boxes:
  1. Meet your required number of points
  2. Volunteer in 1 community opportunity
  3. Volunteer in 1 financial opportunity
A tracking sheet that will be created and shared with you so that you can keep track of your points. In the interim, we strongly encourage you to read our Volunteer Policy and ask questions if you are uncertain about anything.

Of the 2 types of volunteer opportunities, the financial one is harder to meet as there are only two primary ways to earn financial credits - the Calgary New & Used Ski Sale and Casinos.  These are the Clubs' largest fundraisers of the season.

As mentioned, we successfully hosted our casino for this season over the Labour Day weekend. Thank you to our Grizzlies Casino Chair Andrew Kolody for all your work organizing this and to every person who gave up time on the long weekend to work a shift!  At this time we are not scheduled to host any other casinos this season. This leaves the upcoming Ski Sale as the next, and likely only way to earn your financial points.
Calgary New and Used Ski Sale
Since 1963 the Calgary New & Used Ski Sale has been organized and held as a key fundraiser by the Lake Louise Ski Clubs as well as the Canadian Ski Patrol – Calgary Zone, and the Calgary Ski Club. In recent years attendance has topped 10,000 bargain hunters across the three days of the sale. The sale is our club's single biggest fundraiser that helps raise the money that directly results in a 20% reduction in club fees.

Sale Dates: October 24 to 27 (Consignment on Oct 22 & 23)
Location: Max Bell Center, Calgary

Volunteer sign up is now open: Ski Sale Sign-up (make sure to check that you are there to support the Lake Louise Ski Club).

Volunteer Bonus: Access the the Thursday night pre-sale
This is a great place to pick up gear for the whole family and the gear moves fast at this sale so take advantage of this awesome bonus!

Sign up soon to get the shift you want and sign up for as many shifts as you like. This will be one of the last opportunities to get your financial volunteer credits to avoid additional fees.

We look forward to seeing you at the sale this year!  It’s a fun opportunity to meet others from the local ski community while supporting our club as well as a great way to kick off winter.

Any Ski Sale questions can be directed to Kristin at [email protected].

Thanks, from the Lake Louise Ski Club, Ski Sale Management Committee

Volunteer Needed - Ski Sale Floor Manager for Clothing

9/1/2025

Picture
Colleen Garnsey has filled the role of Floor Manager for Clothing for many years on behalf of the LLSCs, however after many years of her daughters racing with the club they have retired, so we are looking for someone to take over this role. Colleen has graciously offered to work with this person at this year's sale to help them learn the role and be her successor.  Colleen describes this role as:
It is a super fun, action packed sale and you get to meet loads of other volunteers from LLSC as well as Calgary Ski Club and the Calgary chapter of the Canadian Ski Patrol.  Oh and they feed us really well and you get to shop the sale before the public 😉.
This role is considered a financial opportunity and is worth 20 points.

If this role interests you, please reach out to me and I will connect you with Colleen!

Thank you to Colleen her many years supporting fundraising with the LLSCs!

With that move, I'm excited to announce our coaching roster for the coming season and would like to welcome Max Favre who will be joining us from France. LLFSC Welcomes New Freeride Head Coach!

6/26/2025

Picture
We would first like to thank Liam Morrison for his incredible contributions to the Lake Louise Ski Clubs. He assures us he will be with the club coaching this season but is stepping down as Head Coach to ensure his success in his masters program.
Picture
We would first like to thank Liam Morrison
With that, I would like to introduce you all to Thibault De Sainte Maresville who will be moving into the role of Head Coach of the LLFSC. I am also thrilled to announce that he will be on contract year-round starting August 1st.
Please check out his introduction letter and join me in congratulating Thibault on his new role with the club. Stay tuned for other important information and as always, have a great day.

A Note from Thibault

Hi Freeride Families!

I am honoured to be stepping into the role of Head Coach for our Freeride program, and wanted to share a bit about my background and vision for the club! I’m originally from Chamrousse, a small town in the Alps in France, where I developed a strong passion for skiing. I moved to Canada some time ago, and after three years programming video games in an office in Montreal, I realized my true calling was to work outdoors in the mountains. After a couple of years of travel, I moved to Western Canada and began working as a ski instructor and freestyle ski coach in Sun Peaks in 2014. I immediately loved sharing my passion for skiing with everyone and instantly knew that it was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

From that moment, I dedicated myself to continuous personal development as an instructor and coach, as I shared my passion for skiing with kids and adults. I’m now a CSIA Level 4 instructor and I am one of the main trainers for freestyle ski instructors in the country. I’m also a Freestyle Canada Supercoach (qualified to train any single invert on trampoline, water ramp, airbag, and on snow) and a learning facilitator for new freestyle and freeride coaches. I have trained athletes and instructors for 13 seasons now, mostly in Canada but also in Argentina, China, and with a high-level freeski team in New Zealand. I was at Lake Louise the last nine years, working four seasons with the ski school and four seasons with ULLR before joining the Lake Louise Ski Clubs two seasons ago.

I am also thrilled to announce that Tom Garstang will be joining me in a leadership position. His extensive experience and infectious enthusiasm will be an exceptional asset, adding significant value and fun to all our training sessions.

I hope our expertise will help the club grow, developing athletes to achieve their goals within a fun, inclusive, and supportive team environment.

My vision includes offering enhanced training and mentorship for our coaching team, further elevating the quality of instruction and supporting coaches in their own development. Additionally, we will prioritize athlete-centred training, ensuring each athlete receives the tailored support they need to achieve their individual goals, leading to more balanced and effective group dynamics.

We will also have a full invert program with trampoline, water ramp, and airbag in summer and fall, and regular airbag sessions along the winter (all February and March).

The core of our training will remain the same: fun practices in a supportive and inclusive environment. However, we will introduce just a little more structure and opportunities for technical and specific training to further promote athlete development.

More details on Summer/Fall invert training program soon. Feel free to reach out with any questions.

Cut Resistant Apparel

5/9/2025

Picture
As ski racing and big mountain skiing evolves and we continue to push new limits, athlete safety remains a priority in our programming.  We are grateful for the technology available to us that mitigates the many risks of training and competition at all levels of the sport.  Helmets, back protectors, and even mouth guards are now standard in alpine and freeride skiing. However, a new piece of protective gear is becoming more widely available and addresses a major risk that seems to be on the rise in the ski world: lacerations from sharp ski edges. Welcome to the chat - Cut-Resistant Apparel.

While these garments have been a fixture on the world stage for several years, a rise in accidents closer to home is highlighting the importance of these garments. Our club alone has seen two athletes sustain significant laceration injuries over the past three seasons.

This April, a young FIS athlete, Joey Macknish, was critically injured from a ski laceration while racing GS at Alberta Spring Series. Joey has asked clubs across Alberta to share his story, stressing how preventable these types of accidents are, and has partnered with VIX Protection to make cut-resistant layers more accessible to our community. Please take a moment to read Joey’s story below.
‘My name is Joseph Macknish, and I am a Team Panorama 1st Year FIS athlete and was unfortunate enough to have been involved in a serious ski accident at Nakiska during a FIS GS race this season, where I simply hip slid and this resulted in 2 serious lacerations below my waist, with one being serious enough they rushed me to hospital via STARS Air Ambulance.

Lacerations and cuts are completely preventable in ski racing, and I am pleased to announce I’ve partnered up with VIX Protection, to help ensure all athletes are protected with cut proof base layers, as no one should have to go through the pain and struggle that I endured.

Why VIX? The owner was a FIS racer and in 2019 he nearly died after slicing through his quad and since then he vowed to eliminate these preventable injuries and formed VIX protection to deliver the best quality full cut-proof base layers, not just certain areas to save on material costs. VIX Protection helped FIS with their testing and use the highest quality materials whilst maintaining a comfortable fit. That is why 72% of World Cup athletes use VIX Protection.

Working with VIX Protection, we have put together a special discount for group orders that will save people money on the products and to further reduce costs, we will be combining the order for each club to reduce shipping and import taxes.

PLEASE REALLY CONSIDER THIS AND PROTECT YOUR ATHLETES.

I would be more than happy to talk with anyone and share details of my experience and my learnings from working with the team at VIX Protection.

Thank you, Joey!’
We encourage anyone in our LLSCs community to take advantage of the significant discount Vix is offering to Alberta athletes. Please take a moment to look at their website VIX Protection and use the Team Order Formfor pricing info and purchasing. Male, female and youth sizing options are available.  Deadline to order is June 30th and families will be sent payment links directly from Vix. Pickup instructions will come from myself once orders are shipped.
