Parent/Volunteer Code of Conduct

This policy applies to any member participating with the Lake Louise Athlete Development Association (LLADA), the Lake Louise Ski Club (Race), the Lake Louise Grizzlies Ski Club (Grizzlies) and the Lake Louise Freeride Ski Club (Freeride), together, the Lake Louise Ski Clubs (LLSC).

The LLSC is committed to creating an environment of camaraderie, respect and good behaviour among athletes, coaches and club families. Each party; athlete, coach and parent, plays a key role in the operation of programs. By signing the Code of Conduct below you agree to the LLSCs expectations of each member’s responsibilities and understand that a coordinated team effort is required for the best possible operation of the LLSC programs.

This Code of Conduct underpins the LLSCs commitment to its RISE philosophy, being Respect, Inclusion, Support and Effort.

All members of the LLSC are required to adhere to this Parent/Volunteer Code of Conduct while participating in LLSC activities, including at races, competitions, training (on snow and off snow), camps, meetings, socials and other club activities.

LLSC  Parents/Volunteers are also required to adhere to all applicable policies, rules and regulations of the LLSC (including “Parent Responsibilities” as listed at https://www.lakelouiseskiclubs.ca/roles.html), the Alberta Alpine Ski Association (“AASA”), including the AASA Code of Conduct and Harassment Policy, as well as all applicable policies, rules and regulations of Alpine Canada Alpine (“ACA”), Alberta Freestyle (“AF”) and the International Ski Federation (“FIS”).

LLSC Parents/Volunteers are considered ambassadors of the LLSC and the sports of Alpine Ski Racing and Freeride and are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that will bring credit to the LLSC and the Alpine Ski Racing and Freeride Communities. Any failure to comply with this Code of Conduct, or failure to comply with any applicable policies, rules or regulations of AASA, ACA, AF or FIS will be reviewable by the LLSC Executive Director, the LLSC Boards of Directors and/or AASA, ACA, AF, FIS, as applicable.

The LLSC adopts the principles of Safe Sport and the Universal Code of Conduct to Prevent and Address Maltreatment in Sport (“UCCMS”). “Safe Sport” refers to our collective responsibility to create, foster and preserve sport environments that ensure positive, healthy, and fulfilling experiences for all individuals. A safe sport environment is one in which all sport stakeholders recognize, and report, acts of maltreatment and prioritize the welfare, safety, and rights of every person at all times. The key themes that define Safe Sport include:
  • Prevention of maltreatment (e.g., physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, etc.)
  • Human rights (e.g., right to participation, right to voice)
  • Equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • Optimization of sport experience (i.e., how we can foster positive sport experiences that ensures everyone thrives and is kept safe in sport)
  • Safe Sport education is highly recommended for all LLSC members and video sessions are available at https://www.lakelouiseskiclubs.ca/safe-sport.html.

In order to create a safe and positive environment for all participants in youth sports, LLSC Parents/Volunteers must adhere at all times to the following (Please check the box to agree with each statement):

Having a Positive Attitude
  1. I will treat all members of the ski racing and freeride communities (including club staff, resort staff, race or competition officials, referees, judges, volunteers, coaches and athletes) with courtesy and respect. I will politely accept the outcomes of races and competitions and athlete performances. If I feel a need to instigate a dispute, I will do so through the correct channels.
  2. I understand that my child/children participate in the sport for their own enjoyment, not mine.
  3. I will respect athletes and coaches. I will commend good sportsmanship and performances by my child/children, their team and other teams.
  4. I will support all reasonable efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse and harassment from youth sports.

Setting a Good Example
  1. I will refrain from public criticism of any member of Alpine Ski Racing or the Freeride communities. This includes ski area staff, coaches, officials, club members and those involved in the operation and safe execution of Alpine Ski Racing and Freeride activities and events. If I feel that I would like to provide feedback, I shall follow the proper protocol and do so respectfully and in good faith.
  2. I will refrain from making comments that may be offensive, insulting, humiliating, malicious, degrading, or intimidating. Such comments will not be tolerated by myself or others. If I feel that I would like to provide feedback regarding the program, coaches or my child’s participation, I shall do so respectfully and in good faith using proper channels.
  3. I will respect that coaches, officials and referees have been trained in the sport. I will refrain from confrontation, respect their decisions, and address any concerns with the correct personnel in a respectful manner and in good faith.
  4. I will control my behaviour, temper and language at all times during, or otherwise in connection with, my child’s participation in training, racing, competitions and Club events and activities.
  5. I understand there will be no tolerance for inappropriate comments, language and gestures during any training, racing, competitions and Club events or activities.
  6. I understand the safety of others is important and will not intentionally hurt others or risk their safety with inappropriate actions or language or provoke such behaviour from others.
  7. I will not use social media (all forms available), letters, email, text messaging or any type of communication to conduct any type of behaviour that may be discriminatory, harassing, violent or offensive towards the club or any club member.
  8. I will refrain from making discriminatory or derogatory comments based on race, ethnic origin, religion, gender, gender identity and/or sexual orientation related to any participant in the Alpine Ski Racing and Freeride community.
  9. I understand there is zero tolerance for violence, and/or abuse of any nature in Alpine Ski Racing and Freeride events and environments. I will avoid any act that may provoke other Alpine Ski Racing or Freeride members or spectators to violence, harassment or abuse in whatever form.

Maintaining Positive Relationships
  1. I will do my best to ensure that my child/children respect all members of the Alpine Ski Racing and Freeride communities, including coaches, officials, volunteers, ski hill staff and other teams or persons.
  2. I will do my best to ensure that my child/children follow rules, regulations, and policies of the Alpine Ski Racing and Freeride communities and demonstrate good sportsmanship. I will encourage my child/children to resolve any conflict through the proper channels and without violence, harassment or hostility.
  3. I will ensure, to the best of my ability, that my child/children conducts themselves in a manner that minimizes the risk of injury, both physical and psychological, to themself and others which includes refraining absolutely from making any derogatory comments as to another individual’s race, ethnic origin, religion, gender, gender identity and/or sexual orientation.
  4. I understand that failure to adhere to this Code of Conduct may result in disciplinary action through the Executive Director, the LLSC Boards of Directors and/or AASA, ACA, AF, or FIS, as may be applicable.

In the event of any failure to adhere to the expectations above, the LLSCs may take any or all of the following steps:
  1. Conversation between the Executive Director and the involved parties (between the appropriate Board member and the involved parties if the Executive Director is involved);
  2. Written warning from the Executive Director (or Board);
  3. Completion of a SafeSport course through Generation Safe at your expense;
  4. You will be asked to join a different club that better suits your athlete’s needs and your membership with the LLSC may be terminated.

If your membership with the LLSC is terminated, program fees are non-refundable.

ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT YOUR CHILD WANTS TO HAVE FUN!
