About Lisa Paulson

Picture
Lisa has over 30 years of experience teaching avalanche safety and is a passionate educator committed to helping the next generation build mountain awareness. As a parent of an athlete in the LLSC race program, she understands the mindset of young skiers who are pushing their limits—and the real risks that exist just beyond the ski area boundary.
Her teen-focused avalanche awareness courses are designed for athletes who may not be venturing into the full backcountry yet but may be drawn to the powder stashes and jumps just outside resort terrain. These courses introduce key safety concepts in a way that’s engaging, age-appropriate, and deeply relevant to how teens experience the mountain.
Lisa is an ACMG Mountain Guide and a senior Avalanche Forecaster and Visitor Safety (Rescue) Specialist for Parks Canada. She is also a lead instructor for professional-level avalanche training and a course designer for new Avalanche Search and Rescue Level 1 & 2. Her deep involvement as an investigator of fatal avalanche accidents for Avalanche Canada gives her a practical perspective on how terrain choices can go wrong—and how to make better decisions.
She continually updates her courses with current best practices, including the Avalanche Terrain Exposure Scale (ATES), the Avaluator decision-making tool, and the latest in avalanche rescue techniques. With a strong focus on real-world application, Lisa helps young athletes develop a critical eye for terrain, awareness of group dynamics, and the confidence to speak up when something doesn’t feel right.
Whether your teen is following tracks outside the ropes or just curious about going further in the future, Lisa’s course lays the foundation for safe mountain travel—now and for years to come.
