LLSCs CLUB UPDATES

Season's Greetings to our Lake Louise Ski Club Family!

12/20/2023

Picture
As the snow blankets our beloved Lake Louise, we're gearing up for another thrilling ski season, and I can't help but share my excitement with each of you—our dedicated athletes, supportive parents, and the heart of our club, the fantastic administrators and coaching staff. The mountains are calling, and they're promising an extraordinary season ahead!

Rewind to my younger days (yes.... skiing for our friendly rivals, the Banff Alpine Racers!), I realize how these slopes didn't just shape my skiing but crafted lifelong memories and friendships. My parents, not knowing what they were getting themselves into as winter-intolerant Greeks when they registered my siblings and I for skiing, rapidly became part of the ski community which we are all a part of.  For them it meant learning a new sport, pride in volunteering to make the dozens of events and programs run effectively but the part that I believe was the most important was the life-long friendships that were formed through the ski community. Friendships that were forged in supporting our children but also supporting each other.

Skiing, often seen as a solo adventure, is ironically one of the most social sports out there. Most of our time is spent sharing laughs on chairlifts, exchanging stories at the bottom of the slopes, or enjoying a beverage at the PK together after a day's adventure. This camaraderie is the spirit of the Lake Louise Ski Clubs.

This year, I'm throwing a friendly challenge to all parents: take a morning or afternoon to ski with someone from the club you haven't skied with before. All of the best friendships start on a chairlift!

As your President, I'm incredibly proud of our club's diversity—from our young Grizzlies mastering the basics, to the dynamism of our All Mountain Program, and the sheer talent of our Race and FIS athletes. We're not just about skiing; we're about nurturing lifelong enthusiasts of this beautiful sport.

So, as the holidays twinkle on the horizon, let's hit the slopes with enthusiasm and friendship. Here's to an amazing season and joyous holidays!

RISE Ambassadors: November

12/14/2023

Picture
November was busy, and we had more athletes than ever hitting snow alongside our dedicated coaches; which bring rise to our yearly kick-off of recognizing our monthly R.I.S.E. Athletes and Coaches of the Month. Celebrating these ambassadors each month through our season is a chance to highlight our club's spirit, values, and get to know some of our awesome members.

For three seasons we have awarded athlete and parents with R.I.S.E. hats. But we've realized we've been missing out on a a crucial part of our community --- our PARENTS! You are such a huge part of our community and as much ambassadors for the LLSCs as anyone else. We are excited to include our Parents into our month R.I.S.E. recognition program.

Head over to our RISE Webpage to catch our monthly R.I.S.E. Ambassadors, and to take opportunity to use our brand new RISE NOMINATION FORM. This is your chance to shine the spotlight on an individual(s) you believe should be considered for a RISE award this season.

A HUGE THANK YOU to our RISE Sponsor, GearUp Mountain Sports for supporting this program with new RISE hats, bag tags, and of course a complimentary tune for our coach winners skis each month!

All Mountain: Emmet Vaivada
Emmet consistently demonstrates what it means to be a RISE athlete. He leads his group of friends by example and does not shy away from telling his peers or friends that they are misstepping from RISE. He treats his friends, coaches, parents, and younger and older athletes with utmost respect. Emmett also contributes to his groupings meaningfully and always tries to pull everyone into the conversation.

Race: Alberto (Bertie) Booker
Bertie  is extremely focused and puts in max effort every day on snow, is always hungry to learn, respects our staff and don't be surprised if you see him stop and help a team-mate or public who need a hand on the hill.  He is starting to stand out as a leader amongst our U16 boys and Bertie is well deserving of this RISE athlete recognition.

Grizzlies: Charlie Korchinski
This month’s RISE athlete is U8 Plus Charlie Kochinski.  While she exhibits all the aspects of RISE, she was chosen because of the tremendous EFFORT she has put in since we started November 2.  Charlie starts her day with a super positive attitude.  She trusts her coaches and tries hard even when some of the tasks are difficult.  When you put in the effort, you will always get improvement.  Charlie now skis faster than she did a month ago.  She can do on snow 360’s both ways.  She now challenges herself and really enjoys skiing bumps and rough terrain. GREAT JOB Charlie!  Ezren and I are really proud of you!

Coach: Liam Grier
Liam Grier always puts his best foot forward to help athletes and staff wherever he can. He always ensures that things are running smoothly both at Lake Louise and away at comps/camps. Grier consistently goes above and beyond what we have asked him to do with both parents and athletes and is an excellent example of what it means to be a RISE ambassador!

Parent: Steph Johnston
Steph is a lifelong member of the club (literally, she is an LLSC Alumni), and while she is our member services extraordinaire, she also goes above and beyond as a parent to help families and strengthen our community. Steph has two boys, Nico and Kael, in the Race program and has a willingness to always look out for their teammates, ski with other parents, be a chaperone or camp grocery shopper, chauffeur, coach supporter, and wear any other hat you can think of! Because of this we feel it appropriate to kick our RISE Parent of the Month Award with Steph!  Thank you for everything!

Volunteer Opportunities

12/11/2023

Picture
Thank you for taking the time to join us in the Sitzmark last weekend. It was great to see many new and familiar faces. Volunteering, really is the backbone of the community within the Lake Louise Ski Clubs and is often a fun and rewarding experience that leads to life long friendships.

As promised, here is a recap of the volunteer opportunities that were presented and the ways in which you can sign up.
  • IT Support (20 points): If you have a background with software and are familiar with Microsoft Office Administration and or Weebly, our wonderful Member Services, Steph, would appreciate your knowledge and assistance.
  • Fundraising committee (15 points): We are looking for a member from each of the three clubs to sit on a committee that helps organize fundraising events for the club. i.e.: Meat sales, 50/50 raffle, etc.
  • Sponsorship committee (15 points): This committee would help bring sponsorships across the line by collecting necessary documentation from the sponsor to be shared on social media and our website.
  • Grant writing (15 points): If you have experience navigating and writing grants, please put your hand up.
  • Competition coordinator (10 points): All Mountain is looking for a Competition Coordinator for each away comp. This volunteer would book blocks of rooms, coordinate team dinner(s), skiing with fellow parents and act as a go between  for  staff and families.  A sign up will be circulated to All Mountain families directly.
  • Content provider (5 points): We are looking for photographers and videographers that would be willing to volunteer their time to get some content that we can use for social media and the website. We like to collect a fairly substantial catalogue that we can pull from over the seasons.  Interested? Reach out to Member Services.
  • Race Organizing Committee (20 points): ROCs are the backbone of every race/event that we host. Members of the ROC will participate in weekly meetings leading up to the events and play a crucial role in the execution of the events.  Watch for sign-ups to be circulated.
  • Race Volunteers (10 points): We are always in need of volunteers leading up to and on the day of events. These roles include setting up safety, maintaining the course, working various positions on the race course, assisting with timing, etc. Last year's DMI had close to 100 volunteers/day from various clubs. Some positions do not require you to be on snow.  Watch for sign-ups to be circulated.

To sign up for any of these positions, please email Sheena and Mandy at [email protected]. If you have any questions about volunteering, please seek out one of your board members or Steph at Member Services. The list above is not comprehensive.  Do you have a skill that may be of assistance, please let us know.

Blanket Glacier Hut Trip

12/6/2023

Picture
LLAMSC is happy to announce that we are going back to the Blanket Glacier Ski Hut with CAPOW guiding this April. The trip will take place April 17th-21st, 2024. The total cost of the trip is $2550, and that includes the helicopter ride in and out of the EHframe, 5-star meals cooked by their amazing chefs, and beautiful ski touring and avalanche safety learning opportunities guided by the world-renowned CAPOW guides.

The athletes and parents that came along last April had an absolute blast skiing pow, building backcountry booters, popping pillows, and learning about the interior BC snowpack. The guides Lisa, Seb, and Aaron showed us an amazing time and we have all been dreaming of going back since.

Please keep in mind that the athletes who attend must have their AST 1 and be older then 14 years old. Registration is up to the coach’s discretion, and seats are reserved for the Lake Louise All Mountain Ski Club. If you are interested, please contact [email protected].

To see more amazing videos and photos, go check out @blanketglacierchalet on Instagram, or check out their website, http://www.blanketglacierchalet.com.

Come join us at the EHframe this season!
