As most of you are aware, Lake Louise Ski Clubs is one of the four organizing clubs for the Calgary New & Used Ski Sale held at Maxwell Theatre each fall.  Part of our responsibility as an organizing club is to provide volunteers to fill  key roles.

One of these roles, Floor Manager for Clothing, has been filled by long time club parent, Colleen Garnsey for many years.  As Colleen's daughter is close to moving on from the club we are looking for someone to transition into this role.  Colleen will be around for the 2025 sale (October 22-26) to share the responsibilities of the role and provide any training needed.  In Colleen's words

As filling our commitment to the Ski Sale is essential to the financial stability of the club, this roles earns a significant number of volunteer credits.  You will earn 20 financial credits for the commitment plus 10 financial credits for each shift you are on the floor at the sale.

​As we enter the back half of our competitive season, it’s easy for athletes to feel like their hard work isn’t enough or that their goals are slipping out of reach—especially when others around them are finding success. The reality is that in an individual sport, only a handful of athletes make it to the top of the podium. But true success isn’t defined by results alone; it’s about how we respond to challenges, learn from each experience, and continue striving for excellence.

Why Disappointment Helps Young Athletes: Building Resilience in Ski Racing and Beyond

​We should all be proud of what happened at the Lake from Jan 27-30, 2025. While the NorAm circuit isn't new to Lake Louise, this was the first time the resort hosted a tech series and the first time our club hosted a race of this caliber. This series is the stepping stone to World Cup, and you rarely make it to the white circus without winning at this level. 

The Lake Louise Ski Club and the Banff Alpine Racers co-hosted the SL and GS series, with Norquay acting as the home for the slaloms on their watered surface and the Lake hosting GS on our World Cup hill we all know as Men's. 

The list of thank yous is endless, but it all started with the Resort's love for ski racing, followed by the confidence of Alberta Alpine in our ROC and the newly appointed Grizz crew for coming together and setting the stage for what was a world class race series. Coaches from around the World and North America were blown away by the quality of the series and wish for this to become a staple of the NorAm calendar. 
 
Many club alumni, along with volunteers from all over Western Canada made the trek out for the week to support our sport, most of which did not have any athletes of their own competing but have dedicated a big part of their lives to it. It was a great reminder of the deep connections we make through alpine skiing. 

Kiki Alexander, who many of you know after her rehab stint with the club last season and Liam Wallace, Sunshine Alumni, both grew up racing in the Bow Valley had very strong showings with Liam winning both GS races, and Kiki with a gold and bronze in the SL. Both were kind enough to share the following with me when asked "How was your experience at the Bow Valley NorAm series and how important was this series for you?" ​

Our next Sisters in Send camp is on FRIDAY, March 28th!

This is a full-day, all-abilities, all-ages camp for female-identifying LLSCs athletes. It is focused on freestyle skiing. Registration opens at midnight on March 1st!

We will utilize the terrain parks, as well as the rest of the LLSR's offerings to develop freestyle-oriented skiing skills and challenge our athletes. They will gain experience on jumps, boxes and rails, under the supervision of an entirely female-identifying coaching staff! These days are super fun, and we always see huge progression. Its a great way to add some new skills to the toolbox early season!

The cost for this camp is $75, and there are NO pre-requisite freestyle skills or experience needed. All we need is your willingness to try new things, get better and have a blast!

We recommend park or all-mountain skis for this camp.

A portion of our FIS team was lucky enough to head down to Kimberley this season, for a great opportunity to train and race both DH and SG. Not to mention the night SL in the middle of all that. Kimberley is always one of the FIS teams favorite stops of the season. Being able to stay on hill ski in ski out, with loads of training opportunities in addition to the perfect DH track. We were lucky enough to get phenomenal weather for the whole series as well. 
 
For the first week and half in Kimberley we had a bigger crew of athletes attending the training camp and FIS series. The athletes had a blast throughout the whole speed camp and were able to ski fast and get some great results in the process. In the middle of all that we had an awesome night racing SL under the lights, with more great results from all the athletes.  
 
With the Noram speed series in Kimberley starting only 2 days after the FIS series, we decided to extend our trip for another week so the athletes could get even more time on the DH track and race against some of the fastest athletes in North America. After a quick trip to Fernie for a powder day, we were right back to racing in the Noram series. The athletes carried their momentum from the FIS series and continued to ski fast and get strong results in the Norams. 
 
After an amazing 3 weeks in Kimberley, some athletes ended up with close to 20 runs on the DH track and had a blast doing it. As per usual, our FIS team is already looking forward to our next trip to Kimberley. 

While we have started February off cold, our athletes have been heating it up on the race and comp circuits! Every club has now had the opportunity to get back in the start gate, with some programs nearing the half way point of their competitive season.  There is a lot to celebrate and we are proud to share with you the athletes who have earned their place on the podium, or displayed outstanding performances while putting their skills to the test this season. 

We've seen FIS racing since December, U14 and U16 provincial series picking up, and U12s prepping for there season to soon start! Hard work has earned these athletes hardware, smiles, Toblerones and more hardwork to keep the momentum going as we enter the busiest part of the race season. A round of a applause for the following athletes and we look forward to adding more names to this list as we enter the last couple months of the season! 

Grizzlies are off to a strong start after their first race of the season at Nakiska. We are expecting a jam packed rest of the season for this crew and wish all our Griz and Griz+ athletes luck and tons of fun in all their up coming competitions. Lets congratulate all the athletes who made it to the top steps in their GS race at the Nakiska Reitbauer race: 

The Lake Louise Freeride Ski Club has had a fantastic competition season so far at various National and Regional IFSA events across Western Canada! This season has gone by quite quickly, with athletes competing at Kicking Horse, Red Mountain, Fernie, Kimberley, and Panorama. We can’t believe the competition season is already halfway through with only four more upcoming events left at Lake Louise, Schweitzer, and Castle Mountain. 
 
The LLFSC wants to give a huge shoutout to all the athletes who have competed so far this season and we are excited to see what the future has in store for these athletes. The level of riding both at IFSA events and within our club is at an all-time high, and it has been a pleasure to watch and cheer our athletes on! Whether it be their first competition or they are a seasoned Freeride athlete, all of you are crushing it this season!

We just want to take a moment to thank all of you for your efforts so far this season!  To date we have successfully met our ski sale and casino commitments as well as hosted a handful of very successful on snow events!

On Monday, January 13th I competed at the Junior Freeride World Championships in Kappl Austria. Such a sick event to be a part of! So cool to experience competing in a new format and trying to find a line without ever being on the venue. Thanks to Coach Liam Grier for helping me come up with a big line I was proud to send! Very happy to get down and finish 7th after some mild miscalculating during visual inspection. A big thanks to everyone that was up early watching I can feel the support! Skiing is awesome, have an epic season!

Our annual survey takes place in January of each season and is a requirement to objectively evaluate club member satisfaction. The insights gathered from this survey inform our Board of Directors during their annual review, helping us continue to deliver professionally designed ski programs in a highly professional manner while upholding RISE principles. Together with our coaches, parents, volunteers, and athletes, we strive to build a community of lifelong skiers.
